AI brand visibility: how to measure it and improve it
AI brand visibility is how often and how prominently ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI name your brand when buyers ask questions in your category. Because the same prompt returns different brand lists on different runs, measure it as a repeat count across many runs, not one check. Three levers move it: cited sources, content format, consistent mentions across the web.
What is AI brand visibility?
AI visibility tracks how often and how prominently AI platforms mention your brand in their responses. That is the whole idea, and it splits into two different things that get confused constantly.
A mention means the model named your brand in its answer. A citation means it linked to your website as a source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and you can be cited without being named in the prose, which is close to worthless for a buyer skimming the answer.
What shapes the mention is broader than your own site. Onclusive describes AI visibility as the product of earned media, owned content, social conversation, third-party authority, and consistent brand signals across the web. Your pricing page is one input among many.
Why does AI brand visibility matter for your brand?
Because the answer replaces the browsing. AI search collapses discovery into a single moment of synthesis, where the buyer forms an opinion from the generated answer instead of working through ten blue links. If your product is not in that paragraph, you were not in the consideration set, and no one clicked past to find you.
The buying behaviour is already there: 47% of consumers have used AI to help make a purchase decision. And presence off your own site correlates with being recommended. Onclusive reports that brands in the top 10% for media influence are recommended by LLMs 80% of the time.
Why a single AI answer can't measure your visibility
This is the part most dashboards get wrong, and it is easy to verify yourself in ten minutes.
welaunch ran the same buyer questions four times each across four engines. In ChatGPT, the sets of brands named for the same prompt across those four runs overlapped by a mean Jaccard similarity of 0.54 across the seven prompts that named any brand, according to welaunch's test of live AI answers, 27 Sep 2026 (06-aeo-live.md, variance section). Perplexity was barely steadier at 0.57 across five prompts, per the same test.
Jaccard of 0.54 means roughly half the brand list changed between identical runs.
Looked at per brand, the same test found that only 9 of 32 brand appearances in ChatGPT answers (28%) showed up in all four runs of the same prompt. In Perplexity it was 6 of 21 (29%).
So if you check once and see your name, you have learned almost nothing. If you check once and don't, same. A single answer is a sample of one from a distribution. The honest metric is: out of N runs of this prompt on this engine, we were named in M of them.
Practically, that means fixing a prompt set, running each prompt several times a week, and reporting a rate. A brand named in 3 of 12 runs is in a genuinely different position from one named in 11 of 12, and both of them will look identical in a screenshot.
How to check your brand's AI visibility
Start with the questions your buyers actually type, not slogans. Ahrefs makes the same point about prompt selection, deriving prompts from real search behavior rather than synthetic or made-up questions. "best X tool for Y team" beats "is [brand] good".
Then cover the engines separately, because they behave differently. Ahrefs' free checker runs ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. Treat each as its own scoreboard.
A workable weekly routine:
-
- Write a set of buyer questions: category questions, comparison questions, "alternative to competitor" questions, and job-to-be-done questions.
- Run each one at least three or four times per engine, in the market you sell to.
- Record, per run: were you named, in what position, and which domains were cited.
- Report rates, not screenshots.
- Keep the full answer text, because the reason you were excluded is usually visible in what the model said about the category.
welaunch's own measurement setup works this way: it asks a founder's buyer questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI several times a week, and keeps every answer in full so you can read exactly what each engine said rather than a score.
What's in an AI visibility report?
A report worth reading shows total AI mentions, a breakdown by platform, the topics that trigger mentions, and which domains and pages get cited alongside your brand.
The last column is the one that turns measurement into work. If 40% of the answers for your category cite a particular comparison page or subreddit thread, that page is your to-do list. Mentions tell you where you stand; cited domains tell you what to go and change.
Tools differ in depth. Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracks AI visibility mentions daily across all platforms, with access to 519 million+ organic prompts plus custom prompts and 2,500 checks per month for custom prompts. Amplitude's free analysis covers visibility score and sentiment across top AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Google AI Overview, plus competitive rankings, critical topics, and related prompts.
How do AI platforms decide which sources to cite?
They don't agree, and the gap is large. From welaunch's test of 434 live AI answers to buyer questions in seven software categories, 27 Sep 2026, US:
| Platform | Avg sources per answer | Share citing Reddit | Same-prompt consistency across runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 5.8 (110 answers, 7 with no source) | 6% (7 of 110) | 28% of brand appearances in all 4 runs; mean Jaccard 0.54 |
| Perplexity | 10.1 (103 answers, 0 with no source) | 31% (32 of 103) | 29% of brand appearances in all 4 runs; mean Jaccard 0.57 |
| Gemini | 9.2 (110 answers, 11 with no source) | 20% (22 of 110) | Not stated |
| Google AI Mode | 3.4 (111 answers, 21 with no source) | 40% (44 of 111) | Not stated |
Perplexity pulls roughly three times as many sources per answer as Google AI Mode. That changes the game: on a wide-sourcing engine, being the eighth-best page on a topic can still get you in; on a narrow one, you need to be in the top handful or on the one aggregator it trusts.
None of these engines restrict themselves to your own site. They draw on earned media, third-party sites, reviews, and rankings. Which is why a content-only strategy stalls.
Why Reddit shows up so often in AI answers
Across all four engines, 106 of 434 answers (24%) cited reddit.com, per welaunch's 27 Sep 2026 test. The spread by engine is in the table above: 40% on Google AI Mode, 31% on Perplexity, 20% on Gemini, and only 6% on ChatGPT.
So "get mentioned on Reddit" is not universal advice. It is close to a requirement if your buyers use Google AI Mode or Perplexity, and nearly irrelevant for ChatGPT visibility.

The practical read: find the threads that already get cited for your buyer questions, and be a useful participant in them. welaunch's approach on those platforms is to name the product only, with disclosure, from the founder's own account.
How to increase AI visibility: the three levers
1. Get cited where the engines already look
Pull the cited domains from your own runs. Rank them by how often they appear. Then work down the list: review sites, comparison roundups, category directories, forum threads. A listing on a domain that already gets cited in your category's answers beats another blog post nobody cites.
Directories are the least glamorous and most tractable part of this. welaunch's database lists 273 launch and listing directories. Of those, 198 accept a free listing, 16 are free only with a badge or backlink, and 56 charge. By type, there are 163 saas and startup directories, 95 ai tool directories and 15 agent and developer directories, with 100 of the 273 accepting AI products only.
2. Format content so it can be lifted
Models quote what is easy to extract. Direct answers near the top. Specific numbers. Comparison tables with named competitors. Named use cases and pricing stated plainly. If your positioning only makes sense after three paragraphs of brand story, it will not survive summarisation.
3. Keep the brand signal consistent
Same product description, same category words, same claims everywhere you appear. Inconsistent naming splits your mentions across variants and weakens the association the model needs to make between your product and the question.
How long does it take to see AI visibility improve?
Longer than a content calendar suggests, and messier. Two things slow you down: engines refresh their source pools on their own schedule, and run-to-run variance means a real improvement hides inside the noise for a while.
Given overlap around 0.54 to 0.57 between runs in welaunch's test, a jump from being named in 2 of 12 runs to 4 of 12 could be luck. A move from 2 of 12 to 8 of 12, held over three weeks, is a real change. Set your review cadence to weeks, and compare rates over rolling windows rather than week against week.
Does AI brand visibility actually drive leads and sales?
Partly, and you should be honest about where the evidence stops. The demand side is documented: 47% of consumers have used AI to help make a purchase decision, and brands in the top 10% for media influence are recommended by LLMs 80% of the time.
What is harder is attribution. Some AI-sourced visits may arrive as direct traffic or branded search rather than a trackable click. So treat mention rate as a leading indicator and watch branded search volume and direct signups alongside it. Do not expect a clean channel line in your analytics.
B2B vs B2C: does AI visibility strategy differ?
The mechanics are the same; the sourcing mix is not. In B2B software categories, community and video sources carry real weight. In welaunch's test, 12 of 63 answers to AI-visibility buyer questions cited reddit.com, and 12 of 63 cited youtube.com. For the narrower "how do I choose a tool" questions, Reddit's share rose: 22 of 80 answers cited it.
So for B2B, prioritise peer evidence (threads, reviews, practitioner posts) over brand-owned pages.
Category questions or product comparisons: where to focus first?
Start with the questions that name tools, because they concentrate. In welaunch's test, Profound was named in 23 of 63 answers to AI-visibility buyer questions, with Otterly and Peec at 17 each. A handful of names absorb most of the mentions in a category, which is both the problem and the opening: those answers are assembled from a small set of comparison pages and threads you can identify and get into.
Comparison and shortlist questions are closer to the purchase and easier to influence.
What are the best AI brand visibility tools?
Pick on coverage and prompt control, not on dashboard polish.
Ahrefs' free AI visibility checker covers ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode, and Ahrefs says the tool is used by 3,000+ companies. Its Brand Radar product tracks mentions daily across all platforms, with 519 million+ organic prompts plus custom prompts and 2,500 custom-prompt checks per month. A report there shows total mentions, platform breakdown, triggering topics, and the domains and pages cited alongside your brand.
Amplitude's free AI visibility analysis gives visibility score and sentiment across top AI platforms including ChatGPT and Google AI Overview, plus competitive rankings, critical topics, and related prompts.
Whatever you choose, check three things: does it run each prompt more than once, does it let you use your own prompts, and does it show the cited domains rather than only a score.
How welaunch tracks and improves AI brand visibility
welaunch asks your buyers' questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI several times a week, and keeps every answer in full so you can read what each engine actually said rather than a number. It finds the pages those engines cite for your questions, then drafts the reply, listing or page that gets you onto one of them. The work runs from your own accounts: welaunch never posts under an account of its own, and you review every draft before it goes out.
FAQ
Why should I track AI brand visibility?
Because buyers increasingly form their shortlist inside one generated answer, where AI search collapses discovery into a single moment of synthesis. If you are not named there, you are not in the running. Tracking shows which questions you miss and which sources the engines used instead.
What is AI visibility in marketing?
It is the measure of how often and how prominently AI platforms mention your brand in their responses to relevant questions. In practice, marketers express it as a mention rate per prompt per engine over repeated runs, plus the list of domains cited in those answers.
What's the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO is Answer Engine Optimization: making sure your brand shows up when AI answers questions in your space. GEO is Generative Engine Optimization: understanding and strengthening how your brand appears across all inputs so AI engines surface favorable information about you. The work overlaps heavily.
What's the difference between a mention and a citation?
A mention is the model naming your brand in its response. A citation is it linking to your website as a source. Mentions reach the reader; citations send traffic. Track both, and
What are the best AI visibility products?
For tracking, Ahrefs' checker and Brand Radar cover six platforms with daily mention tracking, and Amplitude's free report adds sentiment and competitive rankings. Choose based on whether the tool runs repeat checks, accepts your own prompts, and exposes cited domains.
Can I improve AI visibility without digital PR?
To a point. Directory and review listings are the accessible path, and most of them are free to join: 198 of the 273 directories in welaunch's database accept a free listing. But engines also pull from earned media, third-party sites, reviews, and rankings, so in competitive categories some earned coverage eventually matters.
