Google AI Mode and AI Overviews cite pages from the normal Google index, and in our test AI Mode leaned on Reddit and YouTube more than any other engine.

How Google AI Mode picks its sources
To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements.
Both features may use query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics to build the answer and find supporting pages.
nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit how your content shows in AI features, and noindex removes it.
reddit.com was cited in 44 of 111 AI Mode answers (40%) and youtube.com in 20 (18%), the highest share of both on any engine we tested.

Which Google AI Mode crawlers to allow
GooglebotGoogle's crawler. AI Overviews and AI Mode cite pages from the index it builds.
Add these lines to robots.txt:
User-agent: Googlebot Allow: /
A crawler given its own group stops reading your User-agent: * rules, so repeat any private paths you disallow there. Then check the firewall: a CDN rule can block a crawler that robots.txt allows. Check both free with the AI crawler checker.

Get indexed with a snippet
Google's rule is the whole technical checklist: indexed, and allowed to show a snippet. A stray noindex or nosnippet on a key page takes it out of AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Work the Reddit threads it cites
40% of its answers cited reddit.com. For AI Mode, a disclosed, useful reply in a thread that already ranks for your buyer question is one of the strongest levers we measured.

Consider a short YouTube video
youtube.com was cited in 18% of its answers. A plain demo or comparison video titled with the buyer's question is a slot few small SaaS take.

Cover the related questions
Query fan-out means Google also searches the subtopics around a question. Pages for pricing, alternatives and specific use cases give it more ways to reach you.
Google AI Mode questions
How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, with no extra technical requirements. After that it is about being the page that answers the question, or being on the pages that do.
Is AI Mode SEO different from normal SEO?
The eligibility rule is the same as Search. What differs is the sources: in our test AI Mode cited Reddit in 40% of answers and YouTube in 18%, far more than blue-link results usually show for software questions.
Does Google-Extended affect AI Overviews or AI Mode?
Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode follow Search's own controls: noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet.
Can I keep my content out of AI Overviews?
Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet to limit how content shows in AI features, and noindex to remove a page from Search altogether.
Why does Reddit show up so much in AI Mode?
We can only say that it does: 44 of 111 AI Mode answers in our test cited reddit.com. Google has not published why.
How many sources does AI Mode cite?
About 3.4 per answer in our test, the fewest of the four engines, and 21 of 111 answers linked none.
Did you measure AI Overviews too?
No. Our test asked Google AI Mode. Google documents the same eligibility rule for both, so the technical fixes are the same, but we have no AI Overviews citation numbers.
How do I track whether AI Mode names my product?
