AI Overviews tracker comparison 2026: how to see whether Google's AI names you
The AI Overviews trackers worth starting with in 2026 are AIclicks, SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Track My Visibility, ranked here on listed prices and documented features rather than opinion. But an AI Overviews tracker that only logs cited links misses a lot: in one test of Google AI Mode, 21 of 111 answers cited no source at all.
What an AI Overviews tracker actually needs to measure
Most of these tools answer one question: when Google generates an AI Overview for keyword X, does your domain appear among the cited links?
That is useful. It is also narrower than it sounds, because the amount of citing varies enormously by engine. In welaunch's test of 434 live AI answers to buyer questions in seven software categories (27 Sep 2026, US), Google AI Mode cited 3.4 sources per answer on average across 111 answers, and gave no source at all in 21 of them. Perplexity, in the same test, cited 10.1 sources per answer across 103 answers and gave no source in zero of them. ChatGPT sat at 5.8 sources per answer across 110 answers, with 7 answers citing nothing. Gemini: 9.2 sources per answer across 110 answers, with 11 citing nothing.
So the engine that most people mean when they say "Google's AI" is also the stingiest with links. If roughly one in five AI Mode answers names no source, a citation log tells you nothing about those answers at all. Your brand could be recommended by name in the prose and still be invisible to a link-based tracker.
The practical consequence: treat a tracker as one input. Three things matter together.
- Citations: which URLs Google pulls in for your keywords.
- Mentions: whether your brand name appears in the answer text, cited or not.
- Stability: whether the result holds up across repeated checks, because AI answers move.
Tools that only cover the first one are still worth running. Just know which third of the problem you are watching.
Comparison of AI Overviews trackers
AI Overviews trackers compared by what they do, who they suit, and listed price
| Tracker | What it does | Who it suits | Listed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| AIclicks | Checks Google for tracked keywords every 24 hours, tracks 6 LLMs on PRO | Teams tracking many prompts across engines on a fixed cycle | PRO: $189 per month, 300 tracked prompts |
| SE Ranking | AI Overviews tracking with reporting integrations and API access plus MCP | Agencies that already report through Data Studio or similar | Free for 5 keywords; paid tier Not stated on the page |
| Ahrefs | No-signup check, results in seconds, keyword-based and prompt-based indexes | Anyone wanting a fast read plus research on how volatile AI Overviews are | Not stated on the page |
| Track My Visibility | Free report covering visibility, rankings, missed opportunities, competitor comparison and citation tracking | A first look with no account | Free tool; paid tier Not stated on the page |
AIclicks: the most complete paid tracker
AIclicks publishes the most detail about what you get and what it costs, which is why it ranks first here.
The AI Overview Tracker checks Google for your tracked keywords every 24 hours, and shows first results within the hour of setup completion. That matters when you have just shipped a page and want to know whether anything moved.
The PRO plan is $189 per month with 300 tracked prompts, allows unlimited websites, and tracks 6 LLMs. It also bundles 30 AI-optimized articles per month, which is unusual for a tracker: most sell measurement, not content. There is a 3-day free trial with no credit card required, and integrations with Google Analytics and an API.
Where it falls short: $189 a month is a real line item for a solo founder, and the three-day trial is short for a tool whose whole value is watching change over time. Three days of data against a 70% chance of an AI Overview shifting between observations is not much of a sample.
Pick it if you are tracking a few hundred prompts across several brands or client sites and want a daily cycle you can rely on.
SE Ranking: free tier for a quick check, paid tier pricing not published
SE Ranking's tool lets you check 5 keywords for free. That is enough to answer "do my three money keywords trigger an AI Overview, and am I in it", which for many sites is the only question they actually have this quarter.
The reporting side is the differentiator. It integrates with Data Studio, Whatagraph and AgencyAnalytics, and offers API access and MCP integration. If you already send client reports out of one of those, the data lands where your clients look.
Where it falls short: the AI Overviews tracker page does not state a price for the paid tier. Five keywords is a sample, not a programme, so anyone serious will need to ask. Not stated is not the same as expensive, but it does mean you cannot compare on cost without a sales conversation.
Pick it if you run reporting for clients and want AI Overviews data in a dashboard you already maintain.
Ahrefs: best for understanding how volatile AI Overviews are
Ahrefs' tracker requires no signup and delivers results in seconds. It runs on a keyword-based index from Keywords Explorer and also a prompt-based index for long-form questions, which matters because the way people type into AI differs from the way they type into search.
The research published alongside it is the reason to spend time here. Ahrefs reports that AI Overviews have a 70% chance of changing between observations, that cited sources last about 2.15 days, and that 45.5% of cited sources are entirely new each time. On clicks, their research run on December 2025 data puts the reduction in clicks to top-ranking pages at 58%, up from 34.5% in April 2025. Their study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had the strongest link to AI visibility.
That last finding is the one to act on. If mentions correlate more strongly than anything else, chasing a single AI Overview slot is less productive than getting named in more places.
Where it falls short: the page does not state pricing for a paid plan covering more keywords. Treat the free tool as a check, not a monitor.
Pick it if you want a fast answer today and a grounded sense of how unstable the thing you are tracking really is.
Track My Visibility: fastest free report, no paid tier published
Track My Visibility's free tool requires no signup and takes about 2 minutes to generate a report. The report covers AI Overview Visibility, AI Overview Rankings, Top Ranking Keywords, Missed Opportunities, Competitor Comparison and Citation Tracking.
Reading this because you need customers?
Paste your URL. See what ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI answer when your buyers ask, who they name instead of you, and which pages they read. Then we do the work to get you onto those pages.
Free scan, no signup, no card.
Six report sections for free and no account is a good trade for a Monday morning audit. Missed Opportunities and Competitor Comparison are the two to read first: they tell you which queries produce an AI Overview you are absent from while someone else is present.
Where it falls short: the page does not state a paid tier or a price, and does not state a keyword limit for the free report. Two minutes per report also means this is a manual check, not something running in the background.
Pick it if you want the broadest free snapshot and do not yet want to create an account anywhere.
How many keywords can you check free before paying
This is the first question most people have, and the published answers are thin.
| Tool | Free limit |
|---|---|
| SE Ranking | 5 keywords |
| Ahrefs | Not stated; no signup required |
| Track My Visibility | Not stated; no signup required |
| AIclicks | 3-day free trial, no credit card |
Only SE Ranking publishes a number. The other free tools do not state a limit on their pages, so plan on running them manually for the handful of queries that matter and stopping there.
Which tracker updates fastest
AIclicks is the only one of the four that publishes an update frequency: every 24 hours, with first results within the hour of setup completion. SE Ranking, Ahrefs and Track My Visibility do not state an update frequency on the pages reviewed here.
Set that against the volatility numbers. If a cited source lasts around two days and nearly half the sources are new on each observation, a daily check is roughly the minimum cadence at which the data means anything. Weekly checks will show you noise and you will read it as a trend.
Do any trackers cover languages other than English
Ahrefs notes that AI Overviews coverage is strongest in English. The other three vendors do not publish language coverage on their tracker pages, so if you sell in German, Spanish or Japanese, ask before you buy. Not stated here genuinely means not stated, not absent.
Why citations are only part of the story
Put the two sets of numbers next to each other.
Ahrefs reports a 70% chance of an AI Overview changing between observations, cited sources lasting about 2.15 days, and 45.5% of them being entirely new each time. Meanwhile, in welaunch's test of 434 live AI answers (27 Sep 2026, US), Google AI Mode gave no source at all in 21 of 111 answers, and ChatGPT in 7 of 110, and Gemini in 11 of 110.
A tracker that logs links is therefore sampling a surface that rewrites itself every couple of days, and that sometimes has no links to log. A green result on Tuesday and a red one on Thursday may not mean anything you did worked or failed.
The usable approach: look at the share of checks where you appear over several weeks, not whether you appeared today. And read the answer text, not only the link list, because being named without being cited still influences the buyer.
Where Reddit and other repeat sources fit in
The same handful of domains keeps coming back. In welaunch's test of 434 live AI answers (27 Sep 2026, US), 106 of 434 answers (24%) cited reddit.com. Broken down by engine: Google AI Mode cited it in 40% of answers (44 of 111), Perplexity in 31% (32 of 103), Gemini in 20% (22 of 110), and ChatGPT in only 6% (7 of 110).
Narrow it to the category and the pattern sharpens. In the same test, 22 of 80 answers to questions about choosing an AI visibility tool cited reddit.com, and among answers to AI-visibility buyer questions, 12 of 63 cited reddit.com and 12 of 63 cited youtube.com.
The read: if a third-party page appears in a large share of answers for your category, your presence on that page is a durable input, while your own URL's slot in a given AI Overview is not. That is why tracking alone does not change anything. You have to get onto the sources the engines keep returning to.
What to do once you see the gaps
Start with the queries, not the tools. Write down the ten questions a buyer actually types before they pick a product in your category. Run them through one free tracker and read the answer text alongside the link list.
Then sort what you find into three buckets: answers where you are cited, answers where you are named but not cited, and answers where you are absent. The third bucket is where the work is. Look at which domains are cited in those answers, and go get listed, reviewed or mentioned on them.
This is also what welaunch does: it asks your buyers' questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI several times a week, keeps every answer in full so you can read what each engine said, finds the pages those engines cite, and drafts the reply, listing or page that gets you onto one. The work happens from your own accounts, you review every draft and press submit, and on Reddit or Quora it names the product with disclosure rather than stuffing links.
How this list was ranked
Rank order follows how much each vendor documents publicly, with price first.
AIclicks ranks first because it publishes a plan price ($189 per month for 300 prompts) and an update cycle, which makes it the only one you can budget for and compare on cost. SE Ranking ranks second because it publishes a concrete free limit (5 keywords) plus named integrations, though no paid price. Ahrefs ranks third for a no-signup tool with results in seconds and the most published research, with no stated pricing. Track My Visibility ranks fourth for a free report in about 2 minutes, with neither price nor keyword limit stated.
Nothing here is scored on how a tool felt to use. Where a vendor page does not state something, this page says Not stated.
FAQ
What is an AI Overviews tracker?
A tool that checks whether Google generates an AI Overview for a given keyword and whether your domain is among the sources it cites. Some, like Track My Visibility, also record competitors appearing in the same answers. The better ones store history so you can see change over time, which matters given that Ahrefs reports a 70% chance of an AI Overview changing between observations.
Can I remove my site from AI Overviews?
None of the tracker pages reviewed here states a method for opting out. Trackers measure what appears; they do not control it. If removal is your goal, that is a question for Google's own documentation rather than any of these tools.
How do I get my pages into AI Overviews?
No tracker guarantees placement. What the data points at is breadth of presence: Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had the strongest link to AI visibility. Practically, that means getting named on the third-party pages that already get cited for your category, then checking whether the share of answers naming you rises.
Should I trust what AI Overviews say about my brand?
Check it rather than assume it. Answers move: in welaunch's test of 434 live AI answers (27 Sep 2026, US), only 9 of 32 brand appearances (28%) in ChatGPT answers were named in all 4 runs of the same prompt, and 6 of 21 (29%) in Perplexity. A single reading is a snapshot of a moving target.
How is AI Mode tracking different from AI Overviews tracking?
AI Overviews are the generated block on a normal results page. AI Mode is the separate conversational surface. They behave differently: in welaunch's test (27 Sep 2026, US), Google AI Mode cited 3.4 sources per answer across 111 answers and gave no source in 21 of them, which is sparser than Perplexity's 10.1 or Gemini's 9.2 in the same test. Google AI Mode tracking therefore needs to count mentions, not only links.
How many keywords does a free AI overview tracker let you check?
SE Ranking states 5 keywords free. Ahrefs and Track My Visibility both run without signup but do not state a free keyword limit on their pages. AIclicks offers a 3-day free trial with no credit card instead of a free tier.
