Spotlight: finit — a screen-time app that refuses to block anything
Every screen-time tool on the App Store has converged on the same playbook: set limits, get locked out, feel a little ashamed, break the streak, start over. finit looks at that playbook and does none of it. No blocking, no streaks, no shame mechanics. Just a record of every app and every day, kept for years on your iPhone, that you can look at whenever you want.
The pitch is almost philosophical: you can't change what you can't see, and screen time normally evaporates the moment it's spent. iOS gives you a rolling week at best. finit's whole bet is that if you keep the full history, the pattern becomes obvious on its own, and you don't need a lockout to act on it. Their own line is blunt about it: "Have we really reached the point where we can't be trusted with our own time?"
The smart thing here isn't the tracking itself, plenty of apps track screen time. It's the framing and the depth of the views built on top of that record. There's the standard week/month/year breakdown, but also a lifetime projection that takes your current per-app pace and runs it out against your country's life expectancy, so "two hours a day" turns into "years of your life." Then there's the life-in-weeks grid, one square per week of an average lifespan, with the ones already behind you shaded in, and you can apparently get it as a poster. That's a genuinely different emotional register than a red badge saying you're over your limit. It's less "stop that" and more "here's what that actually costs."
The rest of the build supports the same idea without adding friction. It lives on Apple Watch as a ring and simple bars, it can sit on your home or lock screen as a life-in-weeks grid that advances one cell a week, and it'll pull in sleep and exercise from Apple Health so screen time isn't the only lens on your day. There's a friend-comparison feature too, opt-in only, for a bit of social accountability without turning the whole thing into a leaderboard.
On privacy, finit makes a point of syncing through your own iCloud rather than their servers, no ads, no trackers, no data sales, and even the marketing website itself claims no cookies or third-party scripts. For a product whose entire value is a multi-year record of your phone habits, that's the correct default, not a marketing flourish.
Who should try this: people who've already tried the standard blockers, ignored the limits, and are looking for something that treats them like an adult instead of a naughty kid. If you're the type who wants data and context rather than restriction, an at-a-glance sense of "where did my year actually go," finit is built for exactly that. It's also a nice fit for anyone who likes the memento-mori framing of a life-in-weeks poster and wants their phone habits folded into that same picture.
Who should skip it: if you genuinely need hard limits, a functioning off switch, an app that locks you out of TikTok at 9pm no matter what, finit will frustrate you. It explicitly refuses to be that app. It's also iPhone-only for now (Android users are just collecting emails on a waitlist), and if you don't have or want an Apple Watch or you're not big on Apple Health, you'll only get part of the experience.
Where I'd guess this goes next: the Android build is the obvious near-term move given the waitlist is already live, and the friend-comparison feature feels like the seed of something bigger, maybe leaderboards for teams or accountability groups, though that would cut against the "locked to you, private by design" positioning they've built so carefully. The harder long-term question is retention: a record only gets more valuable the longer you keep it, but that also means the app has to survive being ignored for months at a time and still feel worth opening. That's a much slower, quieter growth loop than most habit apps chase, and it might be the more honest one.
