Spotlight: Aubora — photo search that never leaves your Mac
Aubora is a desktop app for Mac that answers a specific, annoying question: where is that one photo, the one you can describe but can't find. You type "red boat at sunset" or "snow on the mountains" and it surfaces the match, without tags, albums, or any manual sorting beforehand. It also groups faces across your library (the site mentions handling over three thousand people in one case) and plots your photos on a map using the location data your camera already saved.
None of that is new on its own. CLIP-based semantic search and face clustering exist in plenty of photo tools. The interesting decision here is where it runs and what it refuses to do. Aubora doesn't ask you to upload your library anywhere. It sits on top of cloud storage you already use, pCloud, Infomaniak kDrive, Dropbox, or a plain local folder, and does all the actual work (image recognition via CLIP, face detection via YuNet) on your own machine. The index is stored locally in an encrypted database, and if you want it synced across devices, it moves an encrypted copy through your own cloud account, not through Aubora's servers. There is no Aubora server holding your photos, because by design there's nothing for one to hold.
That positioning also doubles as their pitch against the two obvious alternatives. Against "just upload everything to a photo cloud with great search," their answer is that you're trading your faces and locations to an ad company for convenience. Against "just self-host Immich," their answer is that running a server, a database, and backups is a second job most people don't want. Aubora's answer is a desktop app with nothing to host, riding on storage you're already paying for. It's a clean wedge: keep the convenience of good search, skip both the privacy trade and the sysadmin work.
The technical build backs up the privacy claim rather than just asserting it. It's built with Tauri (a Rust core, not a bundled browser), running models through ONNX Runtime with CoreML acceleration on Apple Silicon. Location lookups for the map are opt-in and off by default. Whether or not you care about the internals, the practical result is that face data and photo content never leave your device unless you explicitly choose to sync your index.
Who should try this: anyone with a large, messy photo library spread across pCloud, kDrive, or Dropbox who's tired of scrolling to find one specific shot, and who cares enough about privacy to actively avoid dumping their library into Google Photos or iCloud's ecosystem. If you're already someone who chose pCloud or kDrive over the bigger names on principle, this is built for exactly you.
Who should skip it: Windows or Linux users, since this is a Mac app built specifically for Apple Silicon acceleration. Anyone who wants a full photo management suite with editing, sharing links, or albums, since this seems narrowly scoped to search, faces, and a map rather than being a Photos or Immich replacement. And anyone who wants zero setup friction, since you still have to point it at your existing cloud folder and let it index locally before search works.
Where I think this goes next: the free public beta with an email-gated full license is a sensible way to build a base without asking for payment info up front, and it also means early users are effectively beta-testing face grouping accuracy and search quality for them. The open question is Windows support, since a lot of the indie hacker and small business crowd this newsletter reaches isn't all-Mac, and whether the pricing (still unannounced) lands as a one-time desktop app purchase or a subscription will matter a lot for how this gets adopted outside the privacy-conscious early crowd. That's my read, not their roadmap.
