Spotlight: aldena — an AI workforce built for agency retainers

Aldena's pitch starts with a specific kind of pain: you run more projects than you have people for. If you've ever managed a dev shop or agency with five client retainers and three developers, you know the feeling. Aldena's answer is to let you staff each project with a room full of AI agents that have actual roles: a manager, seniors, middles, or a flat team if you'd rather. Each room gets its own dedicated server and its own isolated memory, so nothing about Client A leaks into the room you're running for Client B.

That isolation is the smart part. Most AI coding agent tools are built around a single workspace or a single repo. Aldena is built around the unit an agency actually thinks in: the client, the retainer, the project. The page title says it plainly, this is 'AI workforce that runs monthly client retainers.' That's a narrower and more useful framing than 'AI coding assistant,' and it explains design choices that would otherwise look like overkill, like giving every agent both private memory and a shared room-level memory, or building a skill marketplace so you can attach specific tool integrations to specific agents rather than giving every agent access to everything.

The other deliberate choice is the approval gate. Aldena's language is blunt about it: you approve every ship, nothing leaves the room. Agents produce PRs, docs, deploys, and backlog items through tools you already use (GitHub, Bitbucket, Jira, Linear, Notion, Drive, Gmail, Slack, Sentry, Vercel), but you can run manual or automode approvals depending on how much you trust a given room. For anyone who's been burned by an agent auto-merging something it shouldn't have, that's the right default to lead with.

Who should try this: agencies and consultancies running several concurrent client engagements where the tools are already standardized (GitHub, Jira, Slack, that stack) and where keeping client work walled off from other client work actually matters. If your current setup is a pile of shared prompts and one overworked senior dev supervising too many things at once, the room-as-project model maps onto how you already organize work, and the hierarchy feature (manager delegates to seniors and middles) is trying to replicate the oversight structure you'd build with human hires.

Who should skip it: solo builders or small teams that just want a single capable coding copilot for one codebase. You don't need rooms, hierarchies, or shared memory layers for that, and the pricing reflects it. The free tier caps you at 2 members and 2 rooms, and the paid tiers start at $99 per user per month, then $249, before you even touch usage-based credits, which bill at provider list rates plus a 10% platform fee. If you're pre-revenue or just experimenting, that's real money for a product that just hit its 1.0 changelog. Teams that need heavy customization of how agents reason, or that want to self-host, also aren't the target here.

Where I'd watch this go next: the hierarchy and memory architecture is the interesting bet, but it's also the part that's hardest to judge from a landing page. Does a 'manager agent' delegating to 'senior' and 'middle' agents actually cut down the babysitting, or does it just add a layer of AI-to-AI coordination you now have to audit? And the skill marketplace is listed as a feature, but its depth (how many skills, how they're vetted) isn't yet clear from what's public. If aldena can show a handful of agencies running real retainers through it for a few months, with fewer surprises landing in the approval queue, the room model will have proven itself. Right now it's a well-reasoned bet on a real, specific problem, worth a look if that problem is yours.
